    Instructions for Authors

    Types of Papers

The Journal welcomes manuscripts of the following type and including the following clinical and technological content:

    MANUSCRIPT TYPE

    Original Papers

Original papers should have focus on novel measurements, monitoring, equipment or technology related to anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, and peri-operative medicine. A clinical or physiological problem should be clearly articulated, and a clear description of the technological solution presented.

    Original papers may include:

Reports of novel proof of concept technologies tested in small groups of patients

Large clinical evaluations of technology linked to measures of test accuracy or clinical effectiveness (outcome).

            Assessments of current technology.

            Comparisons of technological solutions.

Study protocols, if considered particularly innovative.

Animal studies, simulation studies and in vitro studies, when potential for clinical application of the results is clear.

Studies of effects of therapeutic or medical intervention, only when the focus relates to technological issues resulting from the intervention, or the intervention is designed to assess technology.

Surveys of the current use of technology.

    Narrative and Systematic Reviews

Describe the state of the art in measurement, monitoring or other technological aspects related to anesthesia, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, and peri-operative medicine.

Reviews for educational purposes, describing instrumentation details or clinical application of technology.

    Technological Notes

Short papers that highlight specific novel or interesting features of a technology.

    Letters to the Editor

            Discussions of previously published work.

Critical issues related to technology and its application. On occasion, high quality short reports focusing on clinical cases describing interesting technological issues will also be considered.

    Editorials and Commentaries

Editorials and commentaries for noteworthy papers are usually invited, but unsolicited commentary papers are welcome. Please contact the Editor-in-Chief prior to submission.

    Clinical and Technological Content

Relates to anesthesia, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, and peri-operative medicine.

Peri-operative medicine includes all as aspects of monitoring associated with the surgical process, including pre and post-operative monitoring during hospital admission and following discharge. Surgical monitoring including intraoperative neuromonitoring.

Chronic disease are generally outside the scope of the journal unless:

    -        Issues relate to the presentation of chronic disease in an acute setting

    -        The chronic disease falls within the clinical domain of the anesthetist, e.g. pain management.

Sports medicine or studies on normal subjects are outside the scope of the journal unless:

    -        required for further understanding of the pathophysiology diseases or patients related to anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, and peri-operative monitoring (this must be the explicit focus of the work)

Description of measurement and therapeutic instruments or equipment and their use.

Algorithms for analysis of monitoring data.

            Mathematical modeling.

            Image analysis.

            Information management systems.

            Decision support and control systems.

            E-learning.

            Ergonomics, workflow, and human factors.

Process or efficiency optimization in anesthesia/intensive care.

            Statistical analysis of monitored data.

    MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

    Language

We appreciate any efforts that you make to ensure that the language is corrected before submission. This will greatly improve the legibility of your paper if English is not your first language. Manuscripts that do not present work in clear, concise English will be returned to the authors for revision before review. Information about editing services is provided further in the Instructions for AuthorsReviewer Suggestions

    Reviewer Suggestions

Authors must suggest a minimum of two reviewers from different institutions and countries other than that of the submitting author, with justification related to their scientific achievement in the specific area of the submitted manuscript. This is a requirement except for countries with large populations (e.g. the USA), or where a clear justification is provided by the submitting author. The journal follows a single blind review procedure.

    Manuscript Submission

    Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

    Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

    Online Submission

Please follow the hyperlink “Submit manuscript” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Please ensure you provide all relevant editable source files. Failing to submit these source files might cause unnecessary delays in the review and production process.

    Title Page

Please make sure your title page contains the following information.

    Title

The title should be concise and informative.

    Author information

    The name(s) of the author(s)

The affiliation(s) of the author(s), i.e. institution, (department), city, (state), country

A clear indication and an active e-mail address of the corresponding author

If available, the 16-digit ORCID of the author(s)

If address information is provided with the affiliation(s) it will also be published.

For authors that are (temporarily) unaffiliated we will only capture their city and country of residence, not their e-mail address unless specifically requested.
