Author Guidelines

Submitting Articles

The Journal of Clinical Hypertension now offers free format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process.

Before you submit, you will need:

Your manuscript: this can be a single file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files – whichever you prefer. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including abstract, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions. Figures and tables should have legends. References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers. If your manuscript is difficult to read, the editorial office may send it back to you for revision.

The title page of the manuscript, including statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies:

funding statement

conflict of interest disclosure

permission to reproduce material from other sources

(Why is this important? We need to uphold rigorous ethical standards for research we consider for publication.)

Your co-author details, including affiliation and email address. (Why is this important? We need to keep co-authors informed of the outcome of the peer review process.)

An ORCID ID, freely available at ORCID.org (Why is this important? Your article, if accepted and published, will be attached to your ORCID profile. Institutions and funders are increasing requiring authors to have ORCID IDs.)

To submit, login at Manuscript Central for The Journal of Clinical Hypertension and create a new submission. Follow the submission steps and submit the manuscript.

If you are invited to revise your manuscript after peer review, the journal will also request the revised manuscript to be formatted according to journal requirements as described below

Article Type Information

The Journal of Clinical Hypertension publishes the following types of manuscripts;

• Original Article: A report of research work or analyses conducted by the author(s) of the manuscript

no more than 2500–4000 words and 25–50 references maximum (about 10–20 pages total)

• Review: This should be a balanced evaluation of the literature pertaining to a topic of interest in the field of hypertension

no more than 2500 words and 25–40 references maximum (about 10 pages total)

• Editorial (by invitation only):

no more than 1500 words and 25 references maximum (no abstracts; about 4 pages total)

• Commentary (by invitation only):

Commentaries invited to accompany an accepted article to allow the expert who is invited to write the commentary an opportunity to define the importance and context of the original work and to go further in speculating where the field might be heading in the future. Up to 1500 words and 20-30 references. Please cite the article that prompted the commentary within the first 1 or 2 paragraphs.

• Letter to the Editor:

Letters in response to a published article in JCH. No more than 600 words (no abstract). Please note, if accepted for publication, the author(s) of the referenced article will be invited to submit a response.

• Reply (by invitation only):

Letters in response to a Letter to the Editor that has been accepted for publication. No more than 600 words (no abstract)

• Opinion:

Focused opinions on areas of hypertension that offer new perspectives or challenge established thinking.  An abstract is not required, 1500 words or less (excluding references), 25 references and up to 4 figures or tables.

• Short Research Article:

Brief reports of data from original research or analysis should include an unstructured abstract (no more than 150 words), 1500 words or less (excluding references), up to 15 references, no more than 2 tables or 2 figures (or 1 of each).

References:

Strict adherence to AMA Style Guide, 10th Edition (Oxford University Press; 2007), Section 3.1—References. Cite references numerically in text (do not use letters); cite unpublished material and personal communications directly in the body of the manuscript and not in the reference list. References should be listed at the end of the manuscript and not in footnote form. The author is solely responsible for the accuracy of references and their use with respect to the supported text. All references should be numbered consecutively in order of appearance and should be as complete as possible. In text citations should cite references in consecutive order using Arabic superscript numerals. For more information about this reference style, please see the AMA Manual of Style.

Please note that journal title abbreviations should conform to the practices of Chemical Abstracts.

Permissions

Author must provide permissions for all Tables, Figures, Images, and Illustrations that are not original to the author or the copyright cannot be transferred (adaptations or reprints from a published source). Permissions should be uploaded as an additional manuscript file upon submission.

Additional Requirements

• Drugs and devices should be referenced by generic name and not by trademark to the extent appropriate.

• Acronyms not otherwise listed in the AMA Sytle Guide should be spelled out within the body of the text the first time used.

• Ethical Publishing: Wiley has systems in place for detecting fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism. Every submission is subject to review at the editors’ discretion.

• Trial Registration:

We suggest registration of all clinical trials.

By submitting a manuscript to or reviewing for this publication, your name, email address, and affiliation, and other contact details the publication might require, will be used for the regular operations of the publication, including, when necessary, sharing with the publisher (Wiley) and partners for production and publication. Post Acceptance

If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services; where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be able to complete the license agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.

Proofs

Authors will receive an e-mail notification with a link and instructions for accessing HTML page proofs online. Page proofs should be carefully proofread for any copyediting or typesetting errors. Online guidelines are provided within the system. No special software is required, most common browsers are supported. Authors should also make sure that any renumbered tables, figures, or references match text citations and that figure legends correspond with text citations and actual figures. Proofs must be returned within 48 hours of receipt of the email. Return of proofs via e-mail is possible in the event that the online system cannot be used or accessed.

Expects Data Sharing

Journal of Clinical Hypertension expects that data supporting the results in the paper will be archived in an appropriate public repository. Authors are required to provide a data availability statement to describe the availability or the absence of shared data. When data have been shared, authors are required to include in their data availability statement a link to the repository they have used, and to cite the data they have shared. Whenever possible the scripts and other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper should also be publicly archived. If sharing data compromises ethical standards or legal requirements then authors are not expected to share it.

Peer Review

This journal operates under a single-blind peer review model. Papers will only be sent to review if the Editor-in-Chief determines that the paper meets the appropriate quality and relevance requirements.

In-house submissions, i.e. papers authored by Editors or Editorial Board members of the title, will be sent to Editors unaffiliated with the author or institution and monitored carefully to ensure there is no peer review bias. Guidelines on Publishing and Research Ethics in Journal Articles

The journal requires that you include in the manuscript details IRB approvals, ethical treatment of human and animal research participants, and gathering of informed consent, as appropriate. You will be expected to declare all conflicts of interest, or none, on submission. Please review Wiley’s policies surrounding human studies, animal studies, clinical trial registration, biosecurity, and research reporting guidelines.
