Author Guidelines

1. SUBMISSION

Authors should kindly note that submission implies that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in the proceedings of a scientific meeting or symposium.

Once the submission materials have been prepared in accordance with the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted online at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/japan

Preprint Policy

The Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition will consider for review articles previously available as preprints. Authors may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to a preprint server at any time. Authors are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article.

2. AIMS AND SCOPE

As an international forum for hypothesis-driven scientific research, the Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition publishes original papers in the fields of animal physiology, biochemistry and physiology of nutrition, animal nutrition, feed technology and preservation (only when related to animal nutrition). Well-conducted scientific work that meets the technical and ethical standards is considered only on the basis of scientific rigor.

Research on farm and companion animals is preferred. Comparative work on exotic species is welcome too. Pharmacological or toxicological experiments with a direct reference to nutrition will be considered. Manuscripts on fish and other aquatic non-mammals with topics on nutrition will also be considered. Manuscripts may be rejected on the grounds that the subject is too specialized or that the contribution they make to animal physiology and nutrition is insufficient.

In addition, reviews on topics of current interest within the scope of the journal are welcome. Authors are advised to send an outline to the Editorial Office for approval prior to submission.

3. MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Original Articles

Original articles represent the most common form of articles published in the journal. Typically they describe the results of experiments carried out in order to test a novel hypothesis. Original articles should contain the following sections: Summary, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, References.

Review Articles

The journal welcomes review articles on topics of high current interest within the scope of the journal. Review articles must also include a Summary, Introduction and References, but the other headings may be chosen depending on the structure of the article.

Short Communications

Short communications are brief articles that present particularly novel or exciting results, introduce new theories or ideas, or offer new methodological approaches. This format provides an opportunity for authors to (a) provide important results in concise form or (b) introduce significant new concepts or methods that are supported by a limited empirical data set. The papers should be highly original and represent ideas that will challenge current paradigms or approaches. They should stimulate thought, serving as precursors to new research programs or working groups. In these manuscripts the headings required for original articles may be omitted, but the structure of the paper should more or less be the same. The length of the short communication should not exceed 3500 words plus 1-2 tables or figures.

4. PREPARING YOUR SUBMISSION

Parts of the Manuscript

The manuscript should be submitted in separate files: title page; main text file; figures.

Main text file

The text file should be presented in the following order:

i. Title

ii. A short running title of less than 60 characters

iii. The full names of the authors

iv. The author's institutional affiliations where the work was carried out, with a footnote for the author’s present address if different from where the work was carried out

v. Acknowledgments

vi. Abstract and keywords

vii. Main text

viii. References

ix. Tables (each table complete with title and footnotes)

x. Figure legends

xi. Appendices (if relevant). Figures and supporting information should be supplied as separate files.

Title. The title should be short and informative, containing major keywords related to the content. The title should not contain abbreviations (see Wiley's best practice SEO tips).

Authorship. For details on eligibility for author listing, please refer to the journal’s Authorship policy outlined in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section.

Acknowledgements. Contributions from individuals who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed, with permission from the contributor, in an Acknowledgments section. Financial and material support should also be mentioned. Thanks to anonymous reviewers are not appropriate.

Conflict of interest Statement. Authors will be asked to provide a conflict of interest statement during the submission process. See ‘Conflict of Interest’ section in Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations for details on what to include in this section. Authors should ensure they liaise with all co-authors to confirm agreement with the final statement.

Animal Welfare Statement

Authors will be required to confirm their adherence to JAPAN’s ethical policies during the submission process. To verify compliance with the journal’s ethical policies, authors must provide an ‘Animal Welfare Statement’ in their manuscript which confirms that EU standards for the protection of animals and/or feed legislation have been met. This statement should also note the relevant ethical background and the ethical approval process and approval number, if available. If no ethical approval was required, for example, if the paper is a review which includes no original research data – this should be stated within the Animal Welfare Statement.

Examples of how these statements may appear are below:

Example of an Animal Welfare Statement where ethical approval was required: ‘The authors confirm that the ethical policies of the journal, as noted on the journal’s author guidelines page, have been adhered to and the appropriate ethical review committee approval has been received. The authors confirm that they have followed EU standards for the protection of animals used for scientific purposes [and feed legislation, if appropriate].’

Example of an Animal Welfare Statement where ethical approval was not required: ‘The authors confirm that the ethical policies of the journal, as noted on the journal’s author guidelines page, have been adhered to. No ethical approval was required as this is a review article with no original research data.’

Summary

The summary should not exceed 300 words, while giving the major objectives, methods, results, conclusions and practical applications of the research.

Keywords

Please provide up to six keywords.

References

References should be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition). This means in text citations should follow the author-date method whereby the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998). The complete reference list should appear alphabetically by name at the end of the paper.

A sample of the most common entries in reference lists appears below. Please note that a DOI should be provided for all references where available. For more information about APA referencing style, please refer to the APA FAQ. Please note that for journal articles, issue numbers are not included unless each issue in the volume begins with page one.

In general, JAPAN does not encourage the citation of unpublished material. In cases where unpublished material is essential to your article, please contact the Editorial Office at JAPANedoffice@wiley.com, who will forward your case to be reviewed by the Co-Editors before submission.

Tables

Tables should be self-contained and complement, not duplicate, information contained in the text. They should be supplied as editable files, not pasted as images. Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the table, legend, and footnotes must be understandable without reference to the text. All abbreviations must be defined in footnotes. Footnote symbols: †, ‡, §, ¶, should be used (in that order) and *, **, *** should be reserved for P-values. Statistical measures such as SD or SEM should be identified in the headings.

Figure Legends

Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the figure and its legend must be understandable without reference to the text. Include definitions of any symbols used and define/explain all abbreviations and units of measurement.

Figures

Although authors are encouraged to send the highest-quality figures possible, for peer-review purposes, a wide variety of formats, sizes, and resolutions are accepted. Figures submitted in colour may be reproduced in colour online free of charge. Please note, however, that it is preferable that line figures (e.g. graphs and charts) are supplied in black and white so that they are legible if printed by a reader in black and white. If an author would prefer to have figures printed in colour in hard copies of the journal, a fee will be charged by the Publisher. Appendices will be published after the references. For submission they should be supplied as separate files but referred to in the text.

Supporting Information

Supporting information is information that is not essential to the article, but provides greater depth and background. It is hosted online and appears without editing or typesetting. It may include tables, figures, videos, datasets, etc. Click here for Wiley’s FAQs on supporting information.

Note: if data, scripts, or other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper are available via a publicly available data repository, authors should include a reference to the location of the material within their paper.

General Style Points

The following points provide general advice on formatting and style.

• Abbreviations: Abbreviations of biological, medical, chemical, and other terms should only be used when such abbreviations are both internationally recognized and unambiguous. The first use of an abbreviation must be explained by also giving the unabbreviated term. All biological, medical, chemical, and other names should be given in keeping with the latest international nomenclature. If an animal is being mentioned in the text for the first time, the binomial name should be given, e.g. carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). Thereafter, this can be abbreviated to C. carpio.

• Units of measurement: Measurements should be given in SI or SI-derived units. Visit the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) website at www.bipm.fr for more information about SI units. Concentrations of solutions should be given as molar concentrations. All other concentrations should be expressed as percentages.

• Statistics: Descriptions of the statistical evaluation of results should be accompanied by the name of the computer software and the procedures applied (one- two-factorial ANOVA, Tukey's test etc.). Average values given in tables should be accompanied by the standard deviation (SD) values, or in experiments where the greater number of samples (animals, units etc.) have been considered, the SEM value as well as probability P should be given.

• Numbers: numbers under 10 are spelt out, except for: measurements with a unit (8mmol/l); age (6 weeks old), or lists with other numbers (11 dogs, 9 cats, 4 gerbils).

• Trade Names: Chemical substances should be referred to by the generic name only. Trade names should not be used. Drugs should be referred to by their generic names. If proprietary drugs have been used in the study, refer to these by their generic name, mentioning the proprietary name and the name and location of the manufacturer in parentheses.

5. EDITORIAL POLICIES AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Editorial Review and Acceptance

The acceptance criteria for all papers are the quality and originality of the research and its significance to journal readership. Papers will only be sent to review if the Editor-in-Chief determines that the paper meets the appropriate quality and relevance requirements.

Data Sharing and Accessibility

The journal encourages authors to share the data and other artefacts supporting the results in the paper by archiving it in an appropriate public repository. Authors should include a data accessibility statement, including a link to the repository they have used, in order that this statement can be published alongside their paper.

Animal Studies

A statement indicating that the protocol and procedures employed were ethically reviewed and approved, as well as the name of the body giving approval, must be included in the Methods section of the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to adhere to animal research reporting standards, for example the ARRIVE reporting guidelinesfor reporting study design and statistical analysis; experimental procedures; experimental animals and housing and husbandry.
