Guidelines to Authors of Fuel Cells – From Fundamentals to Systems

1 General Information

Fuel Cells — From Fundamentals to Systems, is an online-only journal and covers all aspects of fuel cells, ranging from their molecular basis including theory and with molecular processes at catalyst surfaces and microscopic processes in membranes to their applications in systems, such as power plants, road vehicles and power sources in portables. Fuel Cells is a platform for scientific exchange in a diverse interdisciplinary field. All related work in chemistry, materials science, physics, chemical engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering, such as electrolytic processes, batteries and supercapacitors, is included.

Fuel Cells concentrates only on the publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts in form of review articles, original research papers and communications. Articles published in Fuel Cells should be of scientific value to the field and contribute to the present understanding within the scope of the journal.

All articles must be written in American English. Authors are asked to make their manuscripts suitable for a heterogeneous readership—please use a simple, clear style and avoid jargon. It is in the author's interest to ensure accurate and consistent presentation and thus avoid publication delays. Manuscripts written in incomprehensible English in the opinion of the Editorial Office, will be returned to the authors with a request to resubmit after editing. This policy does not imply that all papers must be written in "perfect" English, but the intended meaning of the authors must be clearly understandable by the referees who have agreed to review the paper. Wiley Editing Services offers expert help with English Language Editing, as well as translation, manuscript formatting, figure illustration, figure formatting, and graphical abstract.

Each contribution submitted to Fuel Cells is pre-screened by the Editorial Office and technically suitable articles are sent out for peer review. Manuscripts will be evaluated by independent referees, which will be selected at the discretion of the Fuel Cells Review Editors. Authors are solely responsible for the contents of their contribution and it is assumed that they have the necessary authority for publication.

The contents of manuscripts submitted to Fuel Cells must not have been submitted to any other journal in parallel or published (also only in parts) previously. The authors must inform the Editors of manuscripts submitted to, soon to be submitted to, or in press at other journals that have a bearing on the manuscript being submitted. All submissions must be in accordance with the “Ethical Guidelines for Publication in Journals and Reviews of the European Association of Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS)”.

Color figures in Fuel Cells are highly encouraged and are reproduced free of charge to authors.  Authors may order reprints of their articles or print-on-demand issue copies. Authors may also choose to publish under the terms of the journal’s standard copyright agreement, or Open Access under the terms of a Creative Commons License.

Fuel Cells features cover page graphics for the purpose of highlighting articles featured within the issue. Authors will be contacted to explore this opportunity. Please note that you must own the copyright to reproduce images, if you do not own the images then permission must be granted by the copyright holder.

2 Manuscript Submission

Fuel Cells operates an online submission and peer review system via ScholarOne, that allows authors to submit articles online and track the progress via a web interface. Please read the remainder of these instructions to authors and then go to https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fuelcells to navigate to the Fuel Cells online submission site.

Once logged in, please click on "Submitting Author Center" and let the system guide you through the submission process. Online help is available at all times. It is possible to exit and re-enter the system without losing any information at any stage of the submission process. All submissions are kept strictly confidential.

If applicable, please choose a Special Issue for which your manuscript should be considered.

Authors can follow the progress of their manuscripts on their personal homepage: All manuscripts of the authors submitted to and all review reports written for Fuel Cells are archived here. This homepage should also be used to upload the final revised versions of all manuscripts submitted to Fuel Cells.
