    Submission guidelines

    Instructions for Authors

    Manuscript Submission

    Manuscript Submission

    Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

    Permissions

    Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

    Online Submission

    Please follow the hyperlink “Submit manuscript” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

    Please ensure you provide all relevant editable source files. Failing to submit these source files might cause unnecessary delays in the review and production process.

    Types of papers

    Please provide a word count for your article on the title page.

    Original papers, Reviews, Case Reports, Commentaries, Technical Reports, Differential Diagnosis, Images in Forensics, Lessons from the Museum, Book Reviews, Letters to the Editor.

    Unsolicited book reviews will not be accepted.

    Original papers should be limited to no more than 4,000 words and describe new and original research that has not been previously published.

    Reviews should provide a concise synthesis of a particular condition or disorder and be no longer than 4000-6000 words in length.

    Case Reports should be approximately 1000-2000 words in length and describe a unique feature of a known disorder or an unusual or rare condition.

    Commentaries by one to several authors may be invited or submitted on a range of topical subjects and should be approximately 1000-2000 words in length. On occasion the editors will invite submissions from other authors to debate issues raised in the Commentary to create a forum for generating further discussion.

    Technical Reports should be short papers (1000-1200 words maximum) describing a new or modified forensic technique.

    Differential Diagnosis should include an abstract and key words and be no longer than 1200 words. The article must include a brief description of a particular finding in a “Case Report” format with high quality images, followed by a separate discussion of the features of the lesion/injury/finding with an analysis of the possible differential diagnosis and diagnostic difficulties that may arise in making this determination.

    Images in Forensics should include an abstract and key words and a brief description, no longer than 1200 words, of a particular finding in a “Case Report” format with high quality images, followed by a separate discussion of the features of the lesion/injury/finding.

    Lessons from the Museum should include an abstract and key words and include a brief description, no longer than 1200 word, of a particular finding or condition taken from a case archived in a pathology museum, with full acknowledgement of the source of the material. This is again in a “Case Report” format with high quality images with a discussion of the features of the lesion/injury/finding.

    Forensic Forum is designed to provide a way for readers to examine difficult and/or contentious issues in forensic practice. The structure should be a short summary of a particular issue, concept or provocative theory that an author would like to have discussed or critiqued in an open forum. In the following issue 4 to 5 short responses (up to 500 words) will be published

    Book Reviews are invited and short description of selected texts.

    Letters to the Editor may deal with comments on recently published papers in the journal or other observations that the authors may feel warrants publication. Submissions should be no longer than 400 words with 5 references.

    Special Editions: on occasion guest editors will be invited to collate a special edition of the journal on a particular topic. Both invited and unsolicited submissions will be considered for publication after peer review.

    Updates from the Laboratory should include an abstract and key words and include a brief description, no longer than 1200 words, of a particular finding or condition, with full acknowledgement of the source of the material. This is again in a “Case Report” format with high quality images with a discussion of the features of the lesion/injury/finding.

    Examples of recent submissions can be accessed though the web site. All submissions must undergo peer-review.

    Editorial procedure

    Double-blind peer review

    This journal follows a double-blind reviewing procedure. This means that the author will remain anonymous to the reviewers throughout peer review. It is the responsibility of the author to anonymize the manuscript and any associated materials.

    Author names, affiliations and any other potentially identifying information should be removed from the manuscript text and any accompanying files (such as figures of supplementary material);

    A separate Title Page should be submitted, containing title, author names, affiliations, and the contact information of the corresponding author. Any acknowledgements, disclosures, or funding information should also be included on this page;

    Authors should avoid citing their own work in a way that could reveal their identity.
