论文写作中6类用词错误（上）

  用词错误（word choice errors）是非英语母语人士在科技写作中常犯的错误。每个学科都有自己的惯例，每个学科的研究人员也更容易犯某一类型的错误。

  我们的编辑列出了物理科学研究论文中常见的错误。相关知识点也适用于其他相关学科。

  发音或含义相近的单词

  在母语人士中，这类错误的表现形式一般是口误。而在非母语人士中，这种错误则是由于混淆单词造成的。很多时候，发音相似的单词含义也相似，从而更容易导致混用。

  例 1：

  Attained 和 obtained

  在高温下，传感器不断获取状态数据。

  （×）The sensors attained steady state readings at high temperatures.

  （√）The sensors obtained steady state readings at high temperatures.

  Attain 指取得、达到，一般用于状态或阶段，如：the larva attains maturity（幼体达到成熟阶段）；而 obtain 则指获得、获取，如：he obtained data from hospital records（他从病历中获得了数据）。

  例 2：

  主要的（principal）和原理（principle）

  利用热化学状态下的主要成分得出迁移方程。

  （×）The principle components of the thermochemical state were used to derive the transport equations.

  （√）The principal components of the thermochemical state were used to derive the transport equations.

  Principle 是名词，指规则或规律，如：principle of conservation of mass（质量守恒定律）；而 principal 是形容词，指主要的、重要的，如：principal findings of the study（研究的主要发现）。这两个单词因为发音相似常被误用。

  母语读音导致的拼写错误

  有时候，文化因素也会导致拼写错误。例如，我们的编辑发现，日本作者经常混用字母 l 和 r，这主要是由日语和英语发音不同造成的。

  拼写检查工具能够检查出大部分拼写错误。但有时候，出错的单词可能是另一个拼写正确但含义不同的单词，这时拼写检查工具就无法检查出这类错误。

  例如，作者可能会混用 correct 和 collect、arrow 和 allow、rock 和 lock。

  （×）The poles were displaced in the direction of the applied pressure.

  （√）The pores were displaced in the direction of the applied pressure. 去掉作用压力方向的气孔（pores）。

  单词含义相似，实则不同

  有些单词发音虽然不同，但含义相似或存在重叠，也可能导致误用。

  例 1：

  构思（devised）和设计（developed）

  （×）We have devised a method to calculate the exergy efficiency. 我们构思（devised）了计算有效能效率的方法。

  （√）We have developed a new method to calculate the exergy efficiency.我们设计（developed）了计算有效能效率的方法。

  devise 和 develop 都有提出新事物的含义，但 devise 一般用于想法或计划，而develop 则多用于产品或系统。

  例 2：

  交替的（alternate）与另外的（alternative）

  （×）Alternate measures were developed to reliably calculate the losses. 设计了交替（alternate）措施，用于准确计算损耗。

  （√）Alternative measures were developed to reliably calculate the losses. 设计了另外的（alternative）措施，用于准确计算损耗。

  alternate 和 alternative 都有替换的意思，但 alternate 还有处于不断变化状态的含义，如：alternating current（交流电）。
